Its salsa time!!!!!

I love dancing and that’s precisely why I enrolled myself into this really awesome salsa class.
It all started on a fine Saturday afternoon. I landed into this class to romance the newfound love of the city and have truck loads of fun.I have learnt Bharatnatyam for five years and have always agreed with myself that dance was as natural as breathing for me.However this class taught me how one must not agree with oneself all the time and also that one must graciously accept embarrassment if the past records suggest a high inclination towards being the odd one out(for wrong reasons). For starters, this studio had mirrors all over the walls.Whatever the objective behind this was,I ended up realizing that I was the fattest woman in class.Trust me,if you are a woman ,you will know what I am talking about. The fact that I was surrounded by Miss universe material did not go down well with me.However,I told myself that this was just a passing phase(I could become thin or I could grow immune to the fact) and started concentrating on what I had come to the studio for.By the way,did I tell you that Salsa is a tricky dance??Everytime I got the step right,I ended up stamping my partner’s feet.So when the instructor went 1-2-3,my partner went 1-2-3-ouch!!luckily,women get forgiven easily.Especially if they flash a stupid, remorseful, mindless grin and squeal out a sorry.I am good at that(Thank god!!) .So I flashed a grin here and a grin there and by the time my first class got over,I was sure all the men in the class were rushing out to insure their legs.

In the coming days ,things improved.

I started punching people on their faces instead of stamping their feet. Chivalrous men took it with a smile and always moved five steps away from me after the incident(Out of respect is what one might want to presume.... but that would sound too hollow:)).

Salsa has some of these steps that strongly suggest that the gent must be strong enough to carry the lady’s weight .Salsa also has these steps to tell the ladies that they must be carry-able. My female batchmates probably had air for breakfast ,water for lunch and prayer for dinner as the men carried them along like one would carry a pen or a pencil. The ones who had to carry me had to always revive their religious beliefs ,suffer a catch here and a pull there and emerge out of the situation with a smile playing on their lips.

All this apart, the songs that played in the background had little or nothing to do with the languages my brain could comprehend.I never realised if the song was a sad one or a happy one.So to avoid controversy I maintained an intellectual look(I crisscrossed my eyebrows and let my lower lip slide now and then ).Also, salsa does not believe in the accomodating the numbers 4 and 8 for most of its steps .so the steps are generally numbered as 1-2-3…5-6-7 .For a pure maths student like me ,life becomes miserable when someone tells you that 5 comes after 3!!!

Having said all this, I must admit that I have been having a rollicking time dancing. I certainly am in love with salsa for all its tricks and its subtle reminders to human kind to keep in shape.Looking forward to a lot of dancing, stamping, punching and yes of course ….Grininng!!!!!!!!!
